This is the time of year when people start thinking about the holidays and the endless to-do lists that the holidays bring. While it is a busy time fall is also the time of reflection. People are busy with Thanksgiving plans, realizing they are grateful for another great reason to be celebrating Veterans Day in November. On November 11, we honor our country’s servicemen and women, living or deceased, whether they have served during war or peace-time.
Our veterans elected to put themselves in harm’s way to protect the nation and defend our freedoms. They put family life, jobs, and hobbies to the back burner to serve the country and her citizens. Veterans returning home carry physical scars and psychic scars from protecting our country. Thank you, Veterans, for stepping forward to protect our nation and all that we hold dear to our hearts. We encourage you to say thank you in other ways:
1. Participate in a Parade.
There are hundreds of parades across the country and there may be one in a city near you. Here’s a list of Veterans Day parades to check out. There may be one near you!
2. Display your flag.
Shake out your US flag and fly it high in front of your house or dwelling. It doesn’t have to be huge, and its mere presence says a lot about your thoughts. Displaying it shows that you care, honoring all those who put their lives at risk so that you can be safe and free.
3. Spend time with a veteran.
This day is all about the veteran. Pay your respects your brother, friend, sister, cousin, or mom who served in the army. Invite them over for a meal or suggest spending the day together.
4. Don‘t confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day.
Two holidays that are often confused with each other.
- Veterans Day stands for remembering & honoring all those who served or are currently serving in the US military.
- Memorial Day is recognized on the last Monday in May and is a time to show respect to those who lost their lives while in service for their country.
Keep in mind that many businesses and institutions offer Veterans Day freebies for 2022 included free meals, haircuts, car washes, oil changes, a free night at a bed and breakfast, free entrance to national parks, and free admission to many museums, theme parks, and zoos.
